When we talk about surfboard construction, the stringer is one of the simplest parts to understand. It is a strip of material running through the board, usually from nose to tail. We use it mainly to add stiffness and control how the board flexes.
Different Types of Stringers
| Stringer Type | Common Material | Main Characteristic | Common Use |
| Single Stringer | Wood | Simple and balanced | Softboards, PU boards, general surfboards |
| Double Stringer | Wood | More stiffness | Larger or stiffer boards |
| Triple Stringer | Wood | High stiffness | Larger boards and special constructions |
| Composite Stringer | Fiberglass / composite | Controlled flex with lower weight | Performance constructions |
| Carbon Stringer | Carbon fiber | Very stiff and light | High-performance boards |
Single Stringer
This is the construction we see most often, especially on softboards. A wood stringer gives the board enough support without making the construction unnecessarily complicated or expensive.
For most standard-size boards, one center stringer is enough.
Double & Triple Stringers
Adding more stringers makes the board stiffer and reduces flex. We normally see this on longer boards or constructions where extra support is required.
The trade-off is straightforward: more material, more work, more cost, and usually more weight.
Composite & Carbon Stringers
These are used when weight and flex control become more important. Carbon can provide much more stiffness than a conventional wood stringer, so the amount and position have to be designed carefully.
We don’t simply replace a wood stringer with carbon and expect the board to behave the same way.
Stringer vs. No Stringer
| With Stringer | Without Stringer | |
| Stiffness | Higher | Lower |
| Flex | More controlled | More flexible |
| Weight | Usually higher | Usually lower |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
From a manufacturing point of view, the stringer is not an isolated component. Foam density, fiberglass, resin, board size and the deck/bottom construction all affect the final result.
For us, the right stringer is the one that matches the board construction and target price. Adding more stringers does not automatically make a board better.
