What Does Surfboard Volume Mean in Liters?

Surfboard volume is measured in liters (L). It tells you how much space the board takes up and gives a basic idea of how much flotation it has.

For example, a board with 30L of volume has a calculated volume of about 30 liters. A 35L board will generally provide more flotation than a 28L board.

Why Does Volume Matter?

More volume usually means more flotation and stability. Less volume gives the board a thinner feel and can make it more responsive.

But volume is only part of the design. Length, width, thickness, outline, rocker, and bottom shape also affect how a board performs.

Volume Comparison

For buyers comparing different models, volume can be a useful reference:

VolumeCommon Use
20–25LLower-volume performance boards
25–30LCommon range for many shortboards
30–35LMore flotation and stability
35–40LHigher-volume boards and hybrids
40L+Larger boards and beginner-oriented models

These ranges are only general references. The same volume can feel very different depending on the shape and dimensions.

How Is Volume Calculated?

Surfboard design software calculates the volume from the board’s 3D shape and gives the result in liters.

For brands and buyers, the number can also be used to compare models and control production. If a model is specified at 32L, the finished boards should stay close to that target through consistent shaping and manufacturing tolerances.

In short, liters tell you the volume of a surfboard, but they do not tell the whole story. The shape and dimensions still matter when comparing boards.
